From the Principal
In the 2015-2016 school year, our students have excelled academically earning our school the rating of excellent and being named a Palmetto Gold school for academic excellence. The 50th year of Jesse Boyd Elementary School was a huge success. As our school theme encouraged, our students “Finished the Race” with remarkable achievements, contributions, and growth in both academics and character.
JBE continues to be fully authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years program (IB PYP) enabling our students to acquire a world class knowledge. The IB curriculum is structured in purposeful inquiry that engages students actively in their own learning. The rigorous teaching and learning that occurs is built in a collaborative effort from our teachers using the SC standards and the IBPYP program outlines. At Jesse Boyd, we prepare students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and one another and have the capacity to participate in the world around them by building their world class skills. Our curriculum respects students’ developing ideas about how the world works and encourages them to question, consider and refine their understanding of the social and natural world. Teachers use an inquiry based model of teaching reading and writing workshop incorporating science, math, and social studies.
Additionally, teachers nurture independent learning, critical thinking, as well as creativity and because we know that learning is social, our students spend a great deal of time working collaboratively with peers to build communication, problem solving, and team working skills. All students have access to technology in their classrooms through classroom computers and smart centers as well as class I-pads, and each child in grades 3-5 has his own I-pad used for instruction, communication, and learning. The IBPYP curriculum is unapologetic in efforts to teaching our students to take action based on their learning. In doing so, wrapped in our curriculum are the teachings of the IB learner profile. These are characteristics, which mirror great leaders of our world, are taught through literature, science and history lessons as well as through related classes, guidance class and through our numerous before and after school programs. Those attributes are: principled, risk-takers, caring, knowledgeable, balanced, communicators, inquirers, reflective, thinkers, and open-mindedness. Our students have numerous opportunities to learn about the world around them from our artist in residence program, MUSE machine, Top Dog celebrations, Racing perseverance projects, and a host of clubs where are students can develop mentally, emotionally, physically and socially. Our students are caring world citizens who have self-initiated projects to help those in need including collecting over 33,000 bottles of water for the flood victims of Columbia, SC and contributing over $8,000 to various charities. Helping our children understand that they can be the change they want to see in this world is at the heart of what we do and will continue to do at Jesse Boyd Elementary School.
We hope you can see that there’s No Place We’d Rather Be than JBE.
